James Bowie was a slave trader, a land speculator and a soldier. His rise in popularity began during a sandbar fight between him and the sheriff of Rapides Parish. James was shot and stabbed, but still managed to kill the sheriff with a large knife, which later became the Bowie Knife. He was most noted when he volunteered to led a militia of volunteers into battle. He later became ill and bedridden.
